Why the funny names?

Many people have asked me "why do the Deadwoods have nicknames?" It is a well known fact that the Deadwoods prefer anonymity as their outstanding performance on the field would undoubtedly lead to fame and worldwide recognition that would become much too intrusive. A better question would be "how did they earn their nicknames?" Few Deadwoods have ever picked there own team name. It is usually granted to them for a reason ...

Alphabetical by Player Name:

Player and Fan(s) (and Kids)
beef and liz (Gabriele and Alex) : Beefmaster is a fan of cheap (or chipped?) beef. An avid consumer of bovine products like Spam, jerky, and menudo (cow intestine), Beefmaster has been seen at beef festivals world wide. He has been known to take "Spam-breaks" between innings. Liz (Mrs. Beef) says "it is very difficult to cook for him. If it doesn't have beef parts in it, he won't eat it."

chiChi and mary (Nicolas) : Mary says he has the cutest little chi-chi's ... whatever that means.

cup and beth (Gwendolyn) : Cup made his living through college by begging on street corners and in subway stations. He used a small metal cup to collect his "wages." Apparently he earned a better income than he does at Sandia.

cutoff : Since his rocket throws from the outfield normally hurt people, we

magic and karen ( ) : With nothing up his sleeve, Magic is known for magical feats like making a ball pass right through a glove.

mike and lynn (Shaun and ?) :

minor : A Deadwood conundrum his first year - soooo many penalties his first year but not legally able to pay them! Luckily he no longer strikes out.

patch :

rusty and laura : He tried to avoid getting recruited by Deadwoods by saying how "rusty" he was - obviously not a factor for Deadwoods!

scoop and leslea (Catherine) : One might think the name is derived from his stealth infield glove, scooping up all the ground balls .... until you see him play. Just talk to him a while and you will realize the true origin of his name. When he speaks, one finds that they need a scoop for all the flowing B.S.

shaun :

spamm ( ) : Won a shirt in a contest or something, he blends in with the infield dirt wearing it.

stretch and bernadette : His parents *obviously* had a "rack" and used it on him when he was pliable.

sub JJ :

sub Rocky : Former DW coach of many years he still claims to want to play with us when he's in town.

sub Root and rona (Dominic, Diego and Gracie) : When on base, he has been known to plant a Root ... even on a fly ball with two outs.

veteran Reckless and andrea (many!) : Sliding into second and breaking his leg, shoe-string catches as he falls to the ground, using the withdrawal method of birth-control ... all well-deserved reasons for the name.

veteran Tex and carla (Trent) : Tex prides himself for having two guns. He says one is the bat and the other is in his pants. He is frequently seen with both in his hands.
